A unique NFT launching on May 7th, but what are they?
In this article, we are going to cover the wonderful world of Faticorns. I don't use the phrase “wonderful world” loosely. Faticorns have a whole back story, universe and tale yet to be told. But before we dive into Faticorn lore I think it is a good idea to expand on these key points:
- What are Faticorns?
- Rarity and Collectibility.
- Faticorn Generations.
What is a Faticorn — Where did it come From?
Faticorns or fat unicorns started life years ago as a concept for iron-on patches, you know the kind people stick on leather biker jackets 😃
With the amazing growth of the NFT market, two developers wanted to dip their toes into the ever-expanding ERC721 ocean, and so, with no design skills whatsoever the patch design was called upon.
After a few tweaks, we had the base design and we were off to the races…almost. Our plan was to create an avatar system similar to other avatar builders that would be capable of producing 10,000 unique characters. For this, we needed a lot of layers and variations. After much consideration we settled on the following layers:
- Background: More on this later — it is special.
- Base layer: The foundation of every character.
- Skin layer: Not all Faticorns look the same; black, white, green, spotted, tiger, etc— they’re all beautiful and unique.
- Head Hair layer: There are so many fabulous hairstyles with gorgeous colour variations.
- Tail Hair layer: Faticorns never forget to style their tail to match their mane, in all the colours of the rainbow.
- Mouth: Used as a great way to show our little friends moods and personalities with frowns, smirks and smiles.
- Eyes: No better way to express emotion than through the windows to the soul. A gorgeous variety of hues and expressions are available.
- Horns: No Faticorn is complete without their horn.
- Costumes: These are a special layer, not every Faticorn has one, but they are awesome!
- Items: There must be cake, there should always be cake… and books, phones, coffee, toys. Hooves won't hold them back.
- Emojis: Their face might be showing one emotion, but just like us humans, they might be thinking something else entirely. Over 600 emojis are available — wow.
- Pets: Well I say pets, I really mean friends. Faticorns live in perfect harmony with the world around them. Plus we just couldn't resist adding this cute little guy.
- Trail: Nyan Cat leaves his/her trail of rainbows and happiness and Faticorns are no different, except that it could be anything from rainbows to skulls!
I see 13 layers, big deal, how is that special? I hear you say. On the face of it, 13 doesn't seem like it would allow for 10,000 unique Faticorns. However, most of the listed layers have subcategories and colours. Your Faticorn might be reading The Book of Worms while someone else is reading How to Eat Cake. The books look different and have different colour variants for things like Vol II.
And there you have it. All the layers that are used to make up this awesome Faticorn. The final versions are not animated like this, this is for display purposes only. The final image is a static 90x90 pixel image expanded to 450x450.
What makes Faticorns Collectible?
I might be biased when I say this but surely it’s their pure awesomeness :)
Ok ok, some people might want more information than that.
Faticorn Item Rarity
The layers I previously described have been crafted to deliberately limit the amount of a given item. We do this using a dice that randomly rolls a value from 1 to 10,000. The value rolled determines the rarity of that layer and are broken down as follows:
- Common: 1 to 3999
- Uncommon: 4000 to 6499
- Rare: 6500 to 8499
- Epic: 8500 to 9499
- Legendary: 9500 to 10000
This means you start with a base layer and when it's time to pick a skin we roll the dice of destiny. If you roll 2000, then you will get a skin from the selection of Common skins. If you have been blessed with pure luck, and a dice roll of ‘Over 8500’, you will receive a skin from the Epic pile!
As we repeat this process for every layer, you could end up with a Faticorn completely decked out in Legendary items — lucky you!
Custom and Unique Names
There is no rarity tied to the naming system, just a lot of whimsy and chaos. It might produce a Faticorn named John Smith or even Dr. Tinker von Troutsniffer, Borrower of Lives.
The value/collectibility of names produced is for the community to decide.
Personally, I'm on the lookout for Tooty von Poop Booty. (No joke, I saw that name generated during testing).
Rarity in Faticorn Generations
Now, this is where things really start to get interesting, but the next section will cover this.
What are Generations?
Only 10,000 Faticorns will ever be created. They won't all be created at the same time. They will be created in stages or as we call them, Generations.
Each Generation is symbolized by a uniquely coloured Chaos Crystal.
What is a Chaos Crystal?
These crystals are what give birth to the Faticorns. How and why is covered in the lore. More on that in our next post.
Every Faticorn once adopted will only be visible when a Generation has gone through its Birthing Event. Until then you will see a Chaos Crystal.
Birthing events are scheduled to occur a few days after an entire Generation of Faticorns is adopted or two weeks after a shift from one Generation to the next.
Why are Generations Important?
With each new Generation, new items are introduced. These items will not be available to any other Generation and will be uniquely collectible. Generation 1 could have unique items like;
These and others will never appear in any other Generation.
Each new Generation will also reflect the progress of the Faticorn story via the type of items and backgrounds they display.
Life for the Faticorns is not always rainbows and cake. It can take a darker turn, requiring Faticorns to prepare for a fight and venture away from the luscious meadows and deep into enemy territory.
We will see the background change from tranquil scenes like meadows, rivers and magical forests and into caves, dungeons and enemy lands — very dangerous. You will likely see later Generations of Faticorns wielding weapons of immense power.
